Why Remington?
For years, for a variety of reasons (see here) the gun to go to to build a
custom gun was the Mauser 98. This has been especially tru for the do-it-yourselfer.
However, as the supply of Mausers has gotten scarse.
Nowadays custom gun makers have gravitated to either custom CNC machined actions
(Witchita, Hall, Panda, etc.) or the Reminton 700. The reasons for the popularity
of the 700 (as well as variants such as Model 7 or 40-X) is as follows:
- Unsurpassed action strength/safety. Although some gunsmiths install a standard
claw type extractor the factory design completely supports the case head.
The recessed breach provides longer action threads and the bolt lugs are massive.
- There are action screws at the front and rear and the action provides plenty
of bedding surface so that 700s are really easy to bed.
- For a massed produced action, Remington actions are fairly consistent in
dimensionm and are easy to set up in a lathe for truing.
- Probably due to the above, they are fairly accurate, and they respond well
to accuracy tuning.
- Their have been some safety issues with their triggers, but they are easy
to adjust. The arrangement of the trigger and sear make it easy to replace
the triggers and there are many excellent triggers (and other custom components)
available.
